วิทยาลัยเทคนิคกาญจนาภิเษกอุดรธานีจัดตั้งขึ้นเมื่อ วันที่ ๒ พฤษภาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๘ บนเนื้อที่ ๖๕ ไร่ โดยได้รับพระบรมราชานุญาต ให้ใช้ชื่อพระราชทานพิธีกาญจนาภิเษก เป็นนามสถานศึกษา โดยใช้ชื่อว่า “วิทยาลัยเทคนิคกาญจนาภิเษกอุดรธานี” และในปี พ.ศ.๒๕๔๒ ได้รับเนื้อที่เพิ่มเติมจากกรมธนารักษ์ จำนวน ๙ ไร่ ๒ งาน ๔๐ ตารางวา

วิทยาลัยเทคนิคกาญจนาภิเษกอุดรธานีปัจจุบันมีเนื้อที่รวม ๗๔ ไร่ ๒ งาน ๔๐ ตารางวา

ประเภทวิชาที่เปิดสอน วิทยาลัยฯ เปิดทำการสอน ประเภทวิชาช่างอุตสาหกรรม และ ประเภทวิชาพานิชยกรรม ได้แก่ สาขาวิชาช่างยนต์ สาขาวิชาช่างกลโรงงาน สาขาวิชาช่างเชื่อมโลหะ สาขาวิชาช่างไฟฟ้ากำลัง สาขาวิชาช่างอิเล็กทรอนิกส์ แผนกวิชาช่างก่อสร้างโยธา สาขาวิชาการบัญชี และ สาขาวิชาคอมพิวเตอร์ธุรกิจ
